Where does the staffing star rating come from?
CMS calculates it from the Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ) data each facility submits every quarter. It looks at total nurse hours and RN hours per resident per day, adjusted for how sick residents are, and at staff turnover.
Why would PBJ cap a staffing rating at one star?
CMS assigns one star when a facility does not submit staffing data for the quarter, when its data shows a high number of days without a registered nurse on site, or when the submitted data cannot be verified. The rating then reflects the submission rather than how the building is actually staffed, which makes it one of the fastest ratings to fix.
How often is this data updated?
CMS refreshes Care Compare roughly monthly, and staffing measures change each quarter after PBJ submissions are processed. This page checks for new data every day.
